How to Know You've Hired the Right Lawyer

Updated: Feb 11, 2021

Choosing the right lawyer is the most important thing you can do when you are faced with a legal issue. Let's say you’re about to get into a relationship with someone; you are about to talk about really personal things and make big financial decisions together. So, how do you know if you have hired the right lawyer?

1. You should have a good rapport with them. It is extremely important that the lawyer you choose makes you feel comfortable to speak with them. You need to be open and honest with your lawyer so you should find someone that you feel comfortable being honest with. You should feel that you have input into your matter and the decisions that need to be made, and not that the lawyer is directing or controlling your decision-making.

2. They should be willing to answer your questions in a way you understand. As lawyers, many of us tend to speak in “lawyer talk” – using big words and Latin phrases to make us sound smart. Your lawyer went to law school and passed the bar, I can assure you, they are smart. That means very little if you don’t understand what they are telling you. It is important that they answer your questions and take the time to ensure that you understand what they are telling you. Also, refer to point number one.

3. They should be open and honest about their fees. It is almost impossible for a lawyer to answer the question “how much is this going to cost?” simply because there are so many factors that go into determining how much time a matter is going to require. However, your lawyer should be open about their hourly rate, their retainer requirements, and they should be able to explain how you will be charged and how they will discuss fees and payments with you.

Of course, there are many considerations that go into choosing the right lawyer, but if the lawyer you speak to doesn’t do these three basic things, I would recommend you keep on your search. Interested in staying in touch? Click Here.
